Orchids, Science Fiction, Film Festivals and Cider Tasting
Chicago is a city that keeps right on going through even the chilliest of winters. In fact, some of the best events, exhibitions and festivals take place in February, when life revolves around the “great indoors.” From film to sci-fi, winter blossoms and cider-soaks, there’s plenty to keep you entertained throughout the entire month.
Film and Theater
Sometimes you just want to kick back and watch the world go by. Fortunately, the talented folks of Chicago are quite happy to entertain you, with no energy expenditure required. Relax on the first Tuesday of February at Century Centre Cinema, with some of the best indie flicks of the region at the Midwest Independent Film Festival. Stick around for receptions and producer’s panels. You can also get your theatre fix with more than 100 discounted plays during Chicago Theatre Week from February 8 through 18.
Yes indeed, orchids DO bloom in the bone-cold of winter, and you can bask in their glory from February 10 through March 25 at the Chicago Botanic Garden Orchid Show. Head over to Regenstein Center to see up to 10,000 blooming orchids with names like Odontoglossums, Phalaenopsis and Paphiopedilum. But don’t let their fancy names fool you; they are still the delicate, lovely ladies-in-waiting that cradle the first hints of spring in the Windy City. Check the schedule for live music, evening cocktail tasting, and orchid sale days.
Science Fiction Convention
With a surreal name like “Capricon 38: Expanding Universes,” it’s a mystery what you’ll find at Chicago’s premier 2018 science fiction convention from February 15 to 18. Port your imagination over to the Westin Chicago North Shore to unveil this year’s fantasy and science fiction art, music and games, as well as theater and film debuts. In their own words, it’s a celebration of “the infinite loop from the written word, to the screen, to games, and back again.” Who can resist such a calling, especially when accompanied by special guests from famous sci-fi gaming, books and art?
Nothing warms the innards like steaming cups of hot cider, and Chicago knows how to celebrate subtle flavors of the world’s best cider-masters in 2018. On February 17, 150 artisanal ciders from far-flung corners of the universe take the spotlight at Cider Summit Chicago inside the Grand Ballroom of Navy Pier. Tastings from local Michigan favorites include The Northman, Uncle John’s Hard Ciders, Journeyman and B Nektar Meadery. Pick up your tasting tickets and souvenir glasses, then hit the 2nd-floor Cider Cocktail Lounge and graze through foodie samples from the likes of KRAVE Jerky and Fortune Gourmet. If you’re feeling particularly cider-soaked, take the Enartis Oaked Cider Challenge.
