Portrait of Success: Dan Benak

Senior Vice President of Construction Recognized for Upholding Pinnacle’s Core Value of Transparency

CORE VALUE: TRANSPARENCY

Demonstrate honesty and integrity in everything that we do

2-portraitsuccess_danbenak_postDan Benak has been described as sincere, generous and larger than life by his peers. He is also known to give 110 percent of himself to every project, a trait that earned this former Marine the prestigious Bronze Star with Combat Valor, as well as the Presidential Unit Citation, the National Unit Citation, three Purple Hearts and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry during his service in the Vietnam War. And his dedication to serving others has never waned. If someone needs assistance, Benak is there. Every time.

A 17-year veteran with Pinnacle, Benak is the Senior Vice President of Construction with four decades of experience that has surpassed $150 million in property renovations. He works with an impressive and sustained level of energy and is applauded for his candor.

Benak never sugar coats a situation. If a less than popular scenario comes to pass, such as a project running over budget, he is eloquently honest with the client and has a knack for explaining to the point of acceptance. His no-nonsense communication approach speaks volumes about his integrity and claims the respect of all who know him. Best of all, Benak aims to please.

Drawing on his long-time background in construction engineering and cost accounting, Benak oversees up to 150 projects at any given time for some of Pinnacle’s most prominent clients, like PRI and TIAA. His talents are known through the industry as well. After a property flooded in Arkansas, he was contacted by the owner on a consulting basis because of their prior experience with him on many other projects to secure quality repairs for a fair price. While discussing the details of the insurance claim with the owner, Benak discovered that the City had responsibility for the damage because it had failed to install storm drains after a road work project. His assessment could save that owner nearly $1 million. That is but one of many examples.

Thom Sayers, Director of Global Real Estate Management for TIAA mirrors the sentiments of many clients when he talks about Benak.

“I have worked with Dan Benak for most of two decades. He has completed numerous projects on behalf of us and our clients, always with attention to the economics, execution and timeliness of the projects,” says Thom. “Several years ago, our investment strategy became more heavily focused on value-add/renovation programs. As everyone knows, with unit upgrade programs, time is the enemy. Dan has overseen and coordinated all of these programs in timely fashion, while being flexible and able to troubleshoot in real time. Dan is a critical piece of the success of our value accretion investment programs and helped us to provide superior returns to our clients.”

Throughout the course of his career, Benak continually earns utmost respect because of his trustworthiness, loyalty, courage and innate knowledge to execute multi-million dollar projects. He has also taken a key role in shaping the perception of our company, just by being genuine.

A few of Benak’s co-workers shared their comments about his integrity and honest approach to business.

“Dan has been a big part of our team for many years and is a key point of contact to our biggest clients. He handles the clients with transparency, integrity and honesty which in turn has earned him their trust to engage our services.” – Raymond van Beveren, Senior Vice President of Construction and Facilities Services

“Dan is a wonderful leader, mentor and friend. I’ve known him for 20 years and worked with him for 19. I’m extremely grateful for all that he has done for me and taught me. I literally knew nothing about construction when I started working with him. He’s never allowed to retire!” – Aimee Moffat, Executive Administrator

“For 15 years, I have been one of Dan’s biggest fans. He loves what he does and is great at clearly defining the scope and expectations of the proposed outcome. Dan has never met a stranger. His larger than life personality and cheerful attitude make it easy to work with him. Our clients appreciate his “no change order” philosophy when he quotes their jobs. His congeniality and direct communication is a refreshing combination in our industry. Dan is the real deal.” – Jeanne Klobedans, Regional Vice President.

“Dan is always the consummate professional. Some of his projects go off without a hitch and some, well, some not so much. That’s the nature of the business. I think the fact he reaches out to a client as soon as something is amiss, speaks volumes and makes him so trustworthy. Dan exudes honesty and I am happy to work alongside him regularly and call him my friend.” – Tracy Slappey-Scott, Vice President.

“With Dan, what you see is what you get. He tells it like it is. He takes the time to explain processes, and when necessary, why a cost might be a little higher than anticipated. Being in the office next door to Dan for over four years, I have listened to Dan talk owners off the ledge on countless occasions and come up with an acceptable solution to a major problem. I have seen him take the blame for mistakes of others and turn failing projects into successful ones. He is always there to help when you need him.” Terry Henry, Vice President
