Breakfast With a View: Best Spots at Pike Place Market

Public Market Center Sign in front of MarketThe secret to loving Pike Place Market is to arrive before the crowds, and there’s no better way to start a morning than breakfast with a view. The cherished city market spreads gloriously across the waterfront area with spectacular views of the Puget Sound, Elliott Bay, the Olympic Mountains and ferry boats gliding in and out. So head out early and bring an appetite for sea breezes and homemade local breakfast at Pike Place Market.

Sound View Café

After cheering for the morning fish-toss on the main market level, veer down the ramp to snag a table at Sound View Café. They aren’t kidding about the name, as you’ll be smack-dab on the waterfront with jaw-dropping views of Elliott Bay and the spinning Great Wheel. The Soundview Sunrise menu overflows with traditional breakfast platters and eggs benedict florentine, while the ever-present seafood section could care less about the time day. Breakfast sea-offerings include salmon hash, crab cake frittatas, and a sunrise saute with eggs, scallops, prawns and grilled salmon.  Sound View Café opens at 8 a.m.

The Athenian Seafood Restaurant

You may recognize The Athenian as a setting in the cult rom-com “Sleepless in Seattle” film starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, but the favorite Pike Market breakfast spot has been around for more than 100 years. Ingredients for menu items such as Joe’s Special Egg Scramble and the smoked salmon or Dungeness crab benedicts come straight from market vendors, including Uli’sFamous Sausage and Pure Food Fish. Blueberry hotcakes and frittatas are enduring favorites. You’ll enjoy spectacular water views while lounging in classic wood booths surrounded by historic Seattle waterfront photographs. Doors fling open at 8 a.m.

Lowell’s Restaurant

Lowell’s goes with the market flow, letting you order cafeteria-style and then grab a seat wherever you can. Booths, tables and stools dot three levels of seating, all with sunrise views in the winter months. Since it is The Market after all, you’ll find treasures such as fresh alderwood-smoked salmon with grilled rosemary bread. But you can also order cinnamon-vanilla French toast, slow-braised corned beef hash and grilled breakfast tacos. The Historic Hangtown Fry is a don’t miss Pacific Northwest version of oyster feasting by lucky Gold Rush miners in California. Lowell’s opens at 7 a.m.
