When spring flowers bloom and weather turns warm, it’s time for some well-deserved family fun. Fortunately, Orange County knows how to get everyone out and about for some simple relaxation. Here are a few excursions that skip the long lines and temper tantrums (by all ages).

OC Fair & Event Center
Billed as an enormous animal entertainment festival that also happens to be educational, the Pet Expo takes place at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa and features at least 1,000 animals. You’ll find everything from llamas to goats, rabbits, birds, dogs, pigs, reptiles, rats and miniature horses showcased in stage productions, demonstrations and competitions over a two-day extravaganza. The kids enjoy a petting zoo and how-to workshops, and you can also adopt a pet to take home. Animal experts give tips on training, care and animal personalities.
Pirate’s Dinner Adventure
2600 Beach Blvd, Buena Park
No need to stand in line at a crowded theme park for some swashbuckling buccaneer action – it takes place every day over in Buena Park. The Pirate’s Dinner Adventure includes a four-course feast along with the zany whirlwind show staged from an 18th-century Spanish galleon. Pirates on the high seas swoop, swing and sword fight in a battle for treasure, love and adventure. A dark lagoon swirls below, inhabited by the Loch Ness Monster. Every evening, the crew invites more than 100 volunteers from the audience to jump into the action, becoming part of the interactive show.

Old World Village, Huntington Beach
Never has the classic “wiener dog” gotten more attention than at the Dachshund Races in Huntington Beach. On one Sunday per month at Old World Village, families gather for cheering short little legs to the finish line. You can bring your own dachshund to join the race, or just come and watch the fun. There’s a dog-friendly patio for lunch, and a BBQ kitchen dishes out grilled treats, Bratwurst and German fare. Other dachshund racing events throughout the year include German Heritage Day, Plum Fest, Oktoberfest and a “Wiener Winter” festival.
