Any time is music time in St. Augustine, but summer tunes sizzle up city stages with an energy that’s hard to resist. Fortunately, you don’t have to – because it’s all free! When evening breezes drift across the water, so do melodies from some of northeast Florida’s favorite tunemasters. Here’s a look at the lively outdoor concert series happening on the coast and in the plaza.
Music by the Sea
Music by the Sea is more than just a melodic catch-phrase in St. Augustine; it’s the moniker for a free concert series that rolled into its 16th season in 2018. On Wednesday evenings through September 12, the St. Augustine Beach Pier moves and grooves with hot tunes, spicy food and sizzling seafood from 6 to 9 p.m. Each evening highlights a local band and hometown eatery that dishes out everything from oysters to halibut, barbeque, burgers and curries. The music is free, and you can buy a plate of dinner for $10 or less about an hour before the bands start cranking it out.
The August lineup includes favorites such as Bluez Dudes, Soulfire and the Duffy Bishop Band, eatery hosts such as The Tides Oyster Co. & Grill, Purple Olive, Salt Life Food Shack, Sunset Grille and more. You don’t even have to stalk the streets for parking because the Old Town Trolley provides free shuttles from set locations to the pier.
Drum Circles at the Pier
On third Thursday evenings each month through mid-October 2018, the pier unveils a different kind of musical surprise: the mystical rolling drumbeats of the West African Drum Circles of St. Augustine. With a goal of promoting unity through rhythm and music, the super-talented percussionists take to the open-air pier from 7 to 10 p.m. But it’s not just a showcase performance – they actively encourage everyone to join in the fun. The group brings along a collection of drums and hand-held percussion instruments that are open to all.
Not a drummer or skilled musician? No worries, just thump along or bring some dancing shoes or folding chairs. Remaining dates from late summer through autumn are August 16, September 20 and October 18, 2018. No charge!
Concerts in the Plaza
It’s no secret that St. Augustine’s historic Plaza de la Constitucion is the quintessential community gathering spot. The roots of Concerts in the Plaza dig deep, spanning 28 years of free Thursday performances from Memorial Day to Labor Day in the heart of the city. Swoon to the tunes of eclectic performances such as classic rock from The Grapes of Roth, old-time Americana by Ancient City Slickers, bluegrass from The Dunehoppers, and original jug-band harmonies from Lonesome Bert & the Skinny Lizards.
Bring along a lawn chair, picnic and cooler, or pick up to-go plates from eateries on Cathedral or King Streets. Park downtown and be prepared for rain or shine from 7 to 9 p.m. Get updates and more info at the Market city page.
