In a state that sometimes seems obsessed with fitness, San Jose stands out for innovative ways to actually enjoy pursuing a healthy lifestyle. It’s not a surprise to find people who think outside the box in Silicon Valley, but sometimes you need a few active cohorts to keep the proverbial ball rolling. Here are a few refreshing ways to keep mind, body and soul in tip-top shape.

Soul Cycling

New ways to stay in shape crop up every year or so, but the “soul cycling” trend seems to be progressively rolling around the country. With almost 100 SoulCycle studios in America and Canada, San Joseans have jumped on the indoor-cycling bandwagon with gusto. Here’s an overview of what goes on behind the scenes inside that pulsing candlelit studio on Santana Row. Identifying as a mind-body experience with fellow sojourners, the 45-minute cycling class includes muscle-sculpting and strength training that’s carefully choreographed to rhythmic beats followed by restorative stretches. Sounds easy, right? Head over for a sample class and see for yourself.

Marathon Training

The average person doesn’t aspire to run marathons; that’s just a fact. However, it doesn’t have to be off the table when you live in a community that works together for the greater good. In this case, the “good” is training for marathons that support local charities while also expanding your limits on personal physical fitness. San Jose Fit meets at Los Gatos High School on Saturdays mornings for 24-week marathon training sessions that begin about six months prior to a scheduled marathon. Full training for the October 2018 Morgan Hill Marathon and Rock n Roll San Jose marathons has already commenced, but check the schedule for when the next sessions begin. And remember that Rock n Roll San Jose has much easier 5K and 10K races that you can easily train for on your own.

SUP Yoga

As if standup paddle boarding weren’t challenging enough on its own, you can now do it while twisted in yoga positions. It’s a lot more fun than it sounds, especially because beginners can choose wider SUP boards for balancing, meditating and communing with aquatic nature. A good place to learn is on the gentle waves at Shoreline Lake in Mountain View, about a 20-minute drive from San Jose. The sessions take place on Saturday and Sunday mornings throughout the year, excluding December, and boards are provided. Instructors are happy to teach you some techniques, so take your sunscreen, sunglasses and water-wear over to the lake for a 9:00 a.m. SUP yoga experience.
