As if rolling lawns and grassy picnic areas weren’t reason enough to spend a day at Loch Haven Park, the sprawling park complex also sets the tone for cultural arts in Orlando. Just 10 minutes from the downtown district, some of the most fascinating and diverse museums and cultural centers in Florida huddle amongst towering live-oak trees while hosting special exhibits and events every month. Here’s a look at Loch Haven’s museum magic for February 2020.
Orlando Museum of Art
It goes without saying that the Orlando Museum of Art cradles a comprehensive collection of art from around the world. But every first Thursday comes alive with a collision of visual arts, music and culinary creations centered on a revolving theme. In February this year, it’s all about Health and Wellness, with each artistic medium interpreting the pursuit of physical, emotional, spiritual and mental health and well-being. As part of First Thursdays, which are known as “Orlando’s original art party,” this is a fun, casual event with free parking and a low $15 entry fee.
The Mennello Museum of American Art
The grounds of Mennello Museum of American Art is where eclectic happenings pull in the artsy crowd every month. On the last Sunday of February, the “Yoga in the Sculpture Garden” series continues with a group yoga session at 1:00. There’s also a free Family Fun Day with painting workshops on February 9, as well as a full afternoon of music, art and food at the annual “Indie Folk Fest at the Mennello” event on the 15th.
The Indie Folk Fest is free for everyone to enjoy hands-on art such as printmaking, woodcarving, landscaping, quilt making, jewelry, sculptures, photography and textile art. Bring your own picnic basket and cooler, or snag some piled-high plates of goodies such as Cajun and Creole fare from Voodoo Kitchen food truck, Dixie Dharma southern “vittles,” fresh-baked goods from Olde Hearth Bread Co, and artisan cheeses from La Femme du Fromage. Pets are more than welcome to trot along with you!
Orlando Science Center
The Orlando Science Center stretches its imagination on a Fairy Tale Weekend, the ultimate family-friendly experience for the little ones in your life. It takes place on February 8 and 9, showcasing lots of magical mischief from 11 am to 4 pm on both days. Everyone is invited “by royal decree” to explore the world of fantasy through fables and active adventures. Though it seems like the ultimate play day, it’s actually part of STEAM education principles, which use Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics to guide dialogue and curiosity through critical thinking. It’s all free after paying the standard museum entrance fee.
