Portland: Footloose and Free Autumn Fun

As the air turns crisp and the weather turns, Portlanders rarely retreat from enjoying the free city parks, nature areas and cultural cubbyholes. There’s still plenty of time for getting out and about, so pull on your hoodie and walking shoes for some in-city exploring.

Audubon Society Nature Sanctuary

Within five minutes of downtown Portland, the Audubon Society Nature Sanctuary is one of the city’s most cherished romping spots – and it’s totally free from dawn to dusk every day of the week. Four miles of forested hiking trails cater to all ages and abilities, with individual sanctuaries revealing different types of ecosystems. Field trips led by experts are also free, including bird-song walks, lectures and themed outings. There’s no need to register ahead of time; just show up and bring some binoculars for up-close wildlife encounters from a safe distance.

Free Museum Days

September is the free Museum Day across America, sponsored by Smithsonian Magazine. Portland gets in on the action with several museums participating this year. You only have to go online to reserve your free ticket for fascinating cultural venues such as the World Forestry Center, Portland Art Museum, Oregon Historical Society, Pittock Mansion, Portland Chinatown Museum, and the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education.

Note that the Portland Art Museum also offers free admission during select hours on the first Thursday of every month, all through the year. Other Portland museums are always free, including the Oregon Historical Society, Oregon Rail Heritage Center and the Portland Police Museum and Historical Society.

Tom McCall Waterfront Park

Tom McCall Waterfront Park is where Portland goes to unwind. It thrives in the autumn days as the colorful changing leaves frame the city and riverfront. The park runs for about 1.5 miles along the Willamette River and is chockfull of cyclers, joggers, skaters and buggy-strolling moms and dads. Join in the action, or just take a picnic and watch the city unfold. If the weather is still warm, cool off with a dip in the Salmon Street Springs.

Regardless of the season, it’s easy to make your home in one of our Portland apartment communities. Call today to hear about move-in specials and to visit the property in person.
