When “spring has sprung” in Jacksonville, everyone knows it. The entire city is bursting to life with get-togethers, celebrations and events honoring everything from lanterns to butterflies, blues and Mother Earth. Here are some of the best ways to welcome the new season in The Jax.
Jacksonville Lantern Parade
Saturday, April 7
6 pm to 10 pm
Echoing the Japanese tradition of lantern parades and festivities, the Jacksonville Lantern Parade lights up the Northbank Riverfront with glowing colors and illuminations. The event is free and everyone is invited to join the procession. Just use your own imagination and carry anything that “GLOWS, TWINKLES, or SHINES.” Feel free to drop a donation for art supplies going to area schools.
Yappy Hour Spring Fling
Sunday, April 15 and May 20
2 pm to 5 pm
In a twist on traditional spring-fling parties, this one focus on furry fun with your canine friends. The Yappy Hour Spring Fling takes place at The Landing, featuring live music on the Courtyard Stage and egg hunts (never mind that Easter is long gone). You’ll also bond with your pup over musical chairs, doggietreats, and free giveaways from local pet vendors. Mark your calendar for May 20 to witness the crowning of the King and Queen of Yappy Hour. Dress up your dog in some fancy threads, and sign up for the pageant from 2 to 3 pm.
Saturday, April 21
11 am to 3 pm
Jacksonville joins the rest of America in celebrating Earth Day on April 22, with a free event at Sleiman Riverfront Stage. Bring your friends, family and pets to enjoy live music, a kids play zone, bouncy house, rock climbing wall and a Green Market. A big plus is the chance to take free walking tours in Downtown Jax from Adlib Tours, which typically cost a pretty penny. There are also free prizes all day from local hot-spots, activity vendors and restaurants.
Jacksonville comes alive with spring festivals, so take advantage of warm days and cool evenings at the riverfront, city parks, pavilions, amphitheaters and nature centers. Here’s a quick roundup of some favorite spring festivals.
The Rhythm and Ribs Festival takes place at Francis Field in historic downtown Jacksonville on April 6 through 8, with live music from the likes of Firewater Tent Revival and Grapes of Roth. For some free blues on the oceanfront, head over to Seawalk Pavilion on April 6 for Springing the Blues Music Festival. Meet the nation’s renowned nature and wildlife photographers at the 2018 Birding and Photo Fest on April 18 at Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve. Head over to Tree Hill Nature Center of April 28 for the Joseph A. Strasser Butterfly Festival, and mark your calendar for the Jacksonville Jazz Festival on May 24, covering 15 city blocks and three outdoor stages.
