Time Out: Cozy Coffee Shops in the Vegas Valley

Cozy Coffee Shops Image

Let’s not pretend that major coffee chains only have a minor presence in the Vegas Valley: they’re everywhere and rightfully so. We all love a good cup of java, but there are just as many mom-and-pop or small-chain coffee cafes steaming up our favorite cappuccinos, soy milk lattes and cinnamon mochas throughout Las Vegas and Henderson. Here’s a shout-out to some local favorites.

Sambalatte

It may be tucked inside the huge Monte Carlo casino, but Sambalatte is undeniably owner-operated and hands-on. Owner Luiz hand-selects the beans himself, mostly from his native Brazil, and then roasts them in his own lab. Pour-overs, steampunk machines and a high-tech computer system give “coffee artistry” a sophisticated new meaning, but there’s at least one nod to his zany and colorful location on the Vegas Strip: rainbow lattes. Swirling twirls of greens, reds, oranges and blues culminate in a steamy multi-colored heart. Sambalatte now has two locations off the strip as well, on South Rampart and South Jones.

Bad Owl Coffee

Harry Potter is all grown up, and so are many of his fans – including the caffeine crowd that gathers at Bad Owl Coffee in Henderson. Not the least bit embarrassed at embracing the Harry Potter theme, this coffeehouse pulls out whatever it takes to keep their customers happy, even if that means tables carved with spells, metallic owls and a brick entrance to Hogwarts. Their neighbors from Bad Beat Brewing have joined the coffee culture in collaboration with Bad Owl, brewing up a coffee-based stout with hand-picked beans from Ethiopia.

Coffee Hunter

Going into partnership with your dad isn’t everyone’s dream job, but this father-son duo clicks big-time in the world of coffee. They’ve hit the East Valley with a power-punch of purist espresso drinks sitting haughtily on the same menu as concoctions like Bananas Foster Lattes and waffle shots. Co-owner Hunter Hawkins doesn’t stop with the nitro coffee trend either, he slam-dunks it with nitro ice cream floats. Baristas pour Stumptown Coffee from Hunter’s native Portland, cold coffee brews on tap and artisanal teas, with small-plates of Cornish pasties and Portuguese brigadeiros.
