Inside or out, day or night, tucked into side alleys or strutting disco-lighted stages, the music of Denver gets its heydays every single summer. From local legends to international superstars, here’s a look at some gotta-go-to music gatherings in the Mile High City this summer.
City Park Jazz
We all love City Park and here’s one more reason to do so: 10 free jazz concerts in summer 2019. Lest you think this is a laidback affair with a few trumpets and saxophones, think again. It’s a lively bubbling-over blast of local talent from the likes of Invisible Bird, salsa and Latin jazz by Conjunto Colores, and a Brass Band Extravaganza on July 21. That’s when you’ll hear, among others, the humorous brassy party tunes of Badda Boom Brass Band and the New Orleans-style big-band jazz of Guerilla Fanfare. Leave your wallet at home, unless you can’t resist local vendors dishing out street food all around you.
The Underground Music Showcase
Didn’t make it to South by Southwest in Austin this year? No worries; Denver has its own version of the famous festival, and it’s got an earthy Rocky Mountain vibe you won’t find in Texas. Head over to South Broadway for the multi-night, multi-venue extravaganza known as The Underground Music Showcase. The talents of at least 400 regional and national bands light up 20 venues strung along South Broadway from Alameda to 5th Avenue, keeping you hoppin-and-boppin with thousands of other music devotees from July 26 to 28.
Union Station Buskerfest
The public plaza at Union Station fancies itself a communal gathering spot – and the annual Buskerfest justifies that in a big way. Musicians anchor the Denver busking scene throughout the year, so come out to support this melodic form of street performance at Union Station on August 1 to 4, 2019. But don’t be shocked to find a wild and zany concoction of multi-faceted street performers joining the tunemasters this year. We’re talking hula-hoopers, fire dancers, acrobats, jugglers, break dancers, puppeteers and comedians as well as unicyclers and bucket drummers.
Red Rock Amphitheatre
Nestled in the shadow of 70-million-year-old copper-red sandstone formations, the Red Rocks Amphitheatre feels like landing on a distant planet that’s actually just 15 miles from Downtown Denver. Looming 300 feet over state-of-the-art stages, the towering rocks create a dramatic backdrop for endless musical concerts from April through October every year. There’s a performance just about every day throughout July and August, some with surprise pairings such as “Weird Al” Yankovic with the Colorado Symphony, Dave Chappelle & Jon Stewart, and John Prine or Josh Groban with the Colorado Symphony. Check the schedule for special shows from Diana Ross, Norah Jones, Blues Traveler, and The Head and the Heart.
Whether you like your music on a stage or in headphones at home, you’ll always be tuned in when living in one of our Denver apartment communities. Secure your place in the heart of the city; call today for move-in specials and a personal tour!
